The world's largest racing yachts are the Maxi class racers varying in length from 78 to 83 feet and requiring a crew of 25 athletic sailors. Jim Kilroy's Ron Holland designed 'Kialoa IV' dominated the class for several years and pioneered the composite construction that has become the most accepted method for achieving the lightweight structures that can nevertheless withstand the incredible forces generated by rigs over 100 feet tall.
