ACHARNE

My requirement was for a handsome, ocean-going high performance sailing yacht capable of providing the sort of comforts which would normally be associated only with motor yachts. It was to be sailed in the Mediterranean, the north-west coast of the USA, the Caribbean and the West Indies as well as the Pacific including Australia and New Zealand.

Jon Bannenberg, with whom I had worked twice before had the concept for my new yacht firmly in his mind but I was unsure initially about the choice of naval architect. However, I had been impressed with Ron Holland's previous yachts, notably Garuda and Whirlwind XII and also with his awareness of progress in other fields such as aerospace. He also had an impressive racing history where he had demonstrated so much originality and flair. For these reasons I decided to give him the contract.

He and Jon Bannenberg dealt exceptionally well with all our needs - even our requirements for the provision without compromise of a large inboard diesel tender, a small sailboat, a rubber crew-boat, a motor scooter and two bicycles!

The entire exercise has been carried out most successfully. Acharne's performance has been very encouraging and meets or exceeds all the promises of the computer analysis of the design.
