INTRODUCTION

The creation of a high performance luxury sailing yacht incorporates an exciting array of disciplines. A mixture of traditional skills and high technology brought together to harness and reflect the natural environment of wind and water. Recent developments have allowed the sailing yacht to transcend the restrictions imposed by traditional thinking. This book presents the new era of yachting where performance, in its broadest sense, is compatible with comfort, safety and style.

Nowadays creating a prestigious yacht to the highest standards is possible only through a team effort. Such has been the pace of development in every field, from improved acoustic panels to lightweight sail cloth, from integrated computer aided design to real time monitoring of engine performance, that the yacht designer and builder must enlist expert help, unfettered by traditional thinking or practice. The choice of complementary materials and equipment and how they are integrated into the finished vessel are an essential part of the creation of the new breed of luxury sailing yachts.

Besides the engineering, aesthetic and hydrodynamic criteria involved, the client's wishes must be the prime consideration, without compromise to preconceived ideas of how a sailing yacht should be. The owner may demand privacy above all, whether on extended cruises or in harbour. He may want to relate the style of the yacht's interior to his residence ashore or he may see his involvement with a yacht as a chance to move away from his normal living style and create a new environment. He may even want to run his business from his boat as efficiently as from his office, including holding top level meetings. To this end, modern communications have opened up possibilities undreamed of a decade ago.

Naturally the very choice of a sailing yacht presumes the client is seeking harmony with nature and the romantic notion of sailing long distances in all weather conditions with no outside support, following in the wakes of Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Drake and James Cook. But today's big sailing yacht must incorporate levels of comfort and convenience previously associated only with luxury liners and large motor yachts. This requires interior design and styling equal to the highest standards found ashore. Many of the photographs included in this book illustrate this important aspect of the whole new
