FOREWORD

From: The Rt. Hon. Edward Heath, M.B.E., M.P

HOUSE OF COMMONS August, 1988.

We should all be delighted that Ron Holland has produced this superb book describing and illustrating his work and his achievements.

Those of us who have commissioned the design of a boat from him know that he is first and foremost a conceptual artist who possesses immense practical skill. A good boat always looks good, although looking good is not enough in itself. |

Ron Holland always starts with a broad concept based on his own vision. He takes immense pains in its implementation combined with tireless attention to detail. He pushes its potential performance to the limit without taking unacceptable risks.

In supervising construction Ron Holland is meticulous in every aspect of the boat and its equipment. His knowledge extends to each new technical development. Indeed, many of them spring from his own demands for improvements and his own technical inventiveness.

He is a natural sailor fortunate enough to possess the administrative ability to start and run an organisation of first-class importance for those of us who want boats in the IOR events, in which he was so successful himself, or in the larger ones on which he has recently been engaged.

It is invaluable for all of us that this story should now be told of how a boat develops from its owner's earliest wishes through its conception, design, production and testing to the point where its owner and crew express their satisfaction at her performance.

In my early days of ocean racing I was much influenced by reading the story of 'Intrepid', winner of the America's Cup in 1967, from the minute of the first telephone call to the designer until the crew were thrown into the sea at Newport at their moment of triumph.

This illustrated account of Ron Holland's philosophy, methods, purpose and successes will enlighten all of us, past, present or potential owners and all those who sail his boats.

It is always a pleasure to work with Ron Holland and his team. I wish them still further success.
